Kustom Amps

Kustom is one of the bigger names in guitar amps with along, rich history. While most of their gear is pro-quality equipment designed for the serious player, the company also makes some very affordable practice amps that would be just right for the novice guitar player.

The company was founded in 1966 by Bud Ross, and the first Kustom amps were covered with tuck and roll Naugahyde, similar to automobile interiors. Because of their distinctive look, Kustom amps became popular with Motown session players and such rock bands as Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Today, Kustom’s Coupe Series of tube amps still have a little bit of that retro styling, but they are mostly out of the price range for most beginners. And if you happen to see a ’60s Kustom at a vintage shop, don’t even bother looking at the price sticker. (But do count yourself lucky and take a moment to admire how cool it looks.)

For the novice guitar player, though, Kustom makes some solid practice amps. Their Arrow and Dart series amps are very affordable and sound great. They even make a version called the ‘66 Dart which features the retro tuck and roll look. Some other models you might take a look at are the Sienna 16 watt and the Kustom Dual 30 watt.

Some artists who play Kustom amps include Robert Berg (Fifty-Seven Stitch), Tehrin Cole (Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers), JJ Holiday (The Imperial Crowns), Robert Marcello (Danger Danger), Adam Phillips (Indorphine), and Bryce Soderberg (Lifehouse).
